Desiree: Are Catholics and Protestants both gambling that their bible versions are the true word of a god?
Both the Catholics and Protestants emphatically claim their bibles are the true word of a god but both versions of the bible are different. Not a lot different but the Catholic bible has seven more books than the Protestant bible. So this means that the Protestants are gambling that their god won’t mind them taking seven books out when they made their version of the bible and the Catholics are gambling that their god thinks those seven books are necessary; so these are two directly contradicting belief scenarios, right? If one is right then the other can only be wrong?

It really has more to do with the doctrinal differences than the version of the Bible.

Protestants yes, Catholics no.
You might want to brush up on your Catholic theology. They do not take the Southern Baptist approach to the subject.

What you fail to understand Desiree is that the Bible is about the Church the Church is not about the Bible. The fullness of teaching remains within the Church and not from a book that gets its only authority from the Church. The Church did just fine for 400 years without a Canon of Scriptures. Jesus never taught us to write Scriptures or to canonize the Bible but it was done to combat heresy and quantify inspired writings. It was the teaching authority of the Church that decided that the Bible would be helpful for teaching when studied and understood within the community of the Church that produced it. God bless!

1) Are Catholics and Protestants both gambling that their bible versions are the true word of a god?
Hmmmm….not much of a gamble. (I’m a Protestant who relies primarily on a Roman Catholic version of The Bible)
2) both versions of the bible are different
Are you sure that *both* are different? Maybe only one is different. (OK – joking, joking). Seriously: in my estimation, the traditional Scriptures not included by most Protestants add *nothing at all* to Christian doctrine.
3) So this means that the Protestants are gambling that their god won’t mind them taking seven books out when they made their version of the bible and the Catholics are gambling that their god thinks those seven books are necessary
Here’s a news flash: none of the books are necessary.
For roughly the first 300 years of Christianity there was NO Bible, and Christianity spread like wildfire during that period. Are the Apostles Hell-bound because they did not have “The Bible”? Is anyone saved simply because they *do* have The Bible? The answer to both questions is a resounding “no”.
4) these are two directly contradicting belief scenarios, right?
Yes – but it is an inconsequential contradiction. No Christian teaches, “Your Bible must have only 66 books or you are going to Hell” or “Your Bible must have 73 books or you are going to Hell” (Well, some King James Version Onlyists might teach the first, but if they do it is sad…the unabridged KJV includes 3 Scriptures more than do Roman Catholic Bibles).
Jim,
Answer by Danny H C.A.B.While I agree that if one is right than the other can only be wrong, I disagree with the notion that Catholics are gambling. This implies that the canon of Scripture was determined by chance, or a whimmed guess. The fact is that the Christian bible originated with the Catholic Church after a period of intense study, debate, prayer, and discernment that lasted for centuries. There was nothing random about the determination of the canon.
God bless.

Protestants are gambling, as some Biblical content has been removed by Protestants. They don’t have the Full Canon of Scripture in their bible.
Catholics, on the other hand, are not gambling as their Bible has the Full Canon of Scripture.

Among other differences but yes.

The Catholics are right to have the Full Canon of Scripture. Therefore, there is no gamble.
Protestants, on the other hand, are gambling because they don’t have the Full Canon of Scripture. This doesn’t necessarily mean Protestants are “wrong”. It would be more accurate to claim that Protestants aren’t entirely right, on account of the fact some Scripture is missing from their bible.
